Today finds me at Fairview Southdale Hospital, where Ed and I spent most of last night after his mom fell and broke her hip. She and dad just celebrated 56 years of marriage 3 days ago.
I found myself munching on animal crackers and dreaming of better meals. In July we spent two weeks in Tucson and I have fond memories of the great food we found there.
Janos: Just what you’d expect from a top-notch resort restaurant with a fairly well known chef. We were seated next to floor to ceiling glass overlooking the patio bar and our dinner entertainment included a wild rainstorm. They call it "monsoon season" in AZ, but I’m quite certain other continents would beg to differ. It was a wonderful site and somehow I recall it as one of most romantic moments of the trip. http://www.janos.com/
Poco Cosa: one of my picks, upscale and moderately priced Mexican cuisine by a female chef. We’d suggest the chef’s choice platter – we ordered two and there was no duplication in our dishes. Also, great cocktails! http://cafepocacosatucson.com/
Feast: We tend to be "late eaters" and this has brought us time with chefs more than once. Here Chef Doug Levy spent quite a while talking with us about his food, his history and his vision. I suppose I’d call the food largely Southwestern, fusion as it is very creative. And a very nice wine list, along with a great wine display just off the dining room. http://www.eatatfeast.com/feast/
Chef Alisah’s: Sadly or actually fortunately, we were the sole diners the evening we were there. However, this presented an opportunity to spend two hours chatting with the chef and his wife and learn about Bosnian food and culture while we ate. We learned that they do a booming take-out business and host Bosnian community events as well. It’s a delightful little place in a little strip development and well worth finding. Also, the food was delicious and plentiful and very inexpensive. http://www.alisahrestaurant.com/
Bison Witches: Another of my picks and I’ll include here in case you think we always eat at fine dining joints. This is really a bar with great sandwiches and ambiance. It’s also located in the midst of the some great unique stores, etc. Check out http://www.nativeseeds.org/. http://www.bisonwitches.com/
Tanqueria Pico de Gallo: This is gem we discovered after meeting some folks from MI at a farmer’s market. So well established they appear to not need a web-site, their food is worth the wait in line. http://www.tucsonweekly.com/tucson/best-reason-to-go-to-south-tucson/BestOf?oid=1092749
And just one more Tucson review before I go – a great small chain of used bookstores: http://www.bookmans.com/
One cannot survive by food alone, after all.
