I’m married to a wonderful man, Edwin. He is a scientist at heart, an engineer and a computer geek from way back. He left college in the early 80’s to teach himself computer programming and has made a nice living ever since, for himself and for our family. At one time we had 7 working computers in our home for the 4 members of the family. And, he has always had a passion for other interests as well – independent and foreign film, museums, dogs, travel and fine food. He’s a heck of a cook and I have not prepared a meal for family or friends in at least 3 years and I noticed a long time ago that no one was requesting my cooking either. He cooks like a scientist…every meal is an experiment.
He returned from CIA a changed man. Suddenly we needed (not desired but NEEDED!) many new kitchen tools such as an immersion circulator and every meal is plated before taken to the table. There are some days when I feel we should break out into the chorus of "Food, Glorious, Food" in celebration of the joy that food brings to our life and the life that Ed brings to our food.
This past summer he took a charcuterie class at a St. Paul Culinary school (there are pictures of recent sausage creations on his blog). I’d be hanging out at home with the dog and he’d return with wonderful little bits of meaty delights made by the class. I continue to dream of the pheasant terrine and I believe Dakota (the dog) still expects such gourmet treats whenever Ed arrives home.
About 48 hours from now, Edwin begins his adventure as a full-time culinary student. He has purchased all of his books and developed a little first year anxiety. I am so proud of him knowing it takes incredible courage to depart from the safe and secure path in life to "follow your bliss" (with credit to Joseph Campbell). I feel blessed to be his partner and this is what has motivated me to create this blog…to journal my adventure as Edwin goes to cooking school.
