Last night I began my life as a "professional dinner guest", enjoying great home made pizza with Randy, Terri, Sylvia and Dan. Randy makes it all from scratch, crusts topped a variety of healthy sauces and topping according to each of our individual favorites. Sylvia, visiting from law school at Columbia, created a delicious nectarine cake for dessert. There is little better than an summer meal shared in the back yard of good friends.
And today I took my first solo visit to the grocery store. I had forgotten how very long it has been since I’ve shopped with the goal of actually putting together meals. I am amazed at all the options available that I did not know existed – there is cereal with pink frosting and frozen pizzas in more sizes, shapes and topping selections than any good pizza restaurant in the Twin Cities. I managed, after spending 40 minutes walking up and down the aisles, to spend $38 and come home with tortilla chips, one of those frozen pizzas, 3 pieces of fruit, some laundry soap and a nice bone for the dog, along with some other items that seemed attractive and I hope I can make into a meal soon. I can see I need to relearn how to shop if I am to eat well. It seems not quite so much like bike riding.
