I don’t really celebrate Christmas, as a Christian holiday – though in my growing up years I did, along with all of the other Judeo-Christian days.  I was baptized Catholic, participated in my first communion in and then when my parents divorced following my 2nd grade year, my mother was excommunicated from the church.  This brought her back to the church of her childhood, the Methodists, and my years through high school were fairly traditionally protestant – church every Sunday AM, president of the youth group, etc.  Until I was 13 and it was time to "join the church" and state publicly that I believed in this one God, these stories and would remain forever Methodist.  I don’t in any way regret my Methodist upbringing, I loved it all…the Easter breakfasts with my grandparents, the palms on Palm Sunday and the Christmas Story pageants each December.

Looking back I do the embarrassment I caused my mother as I was asked to leave the youth group upon realizing I could not at 13, in good faith, make this commitment to myself or to others.  At 17, I found the largest independent religious congregation in the world.  I still recall and can feel sitting in the balcony on my first Sunday there – I was in my spiritual home.  For the next 23 years I explored and grew and questioned and answered and confirmed my faith as it remains today.

All of this comes to mind as I think about MY 12 days of Christmas – which are rarely consecutive and yet always come to pass.  Some are easier to identify; this year both Nik and Malina will arrive in Minneapolis on Monday the 21st and as this gift is difficult to beat I know this will be one of the days this season.  The others will be a surprise — an intimate happy hour with a good friend, a drive around the neighborhood to see someone’s really special yard lights, a surprise telephone call or email greeting.  I have to be on guard, to pay attention at all times to ensure that I don’t miss one of the moments – for fear the ladies dancing (or the lords a-leaping!) appear to be merely an annoyance in the traffic as I move through the city.
