Let the wild rumpus start!

Ed has two days off from school this week, Tuesday and Wednesday.  So, taking advantage of this we had a great date night last night – 2 movies and a burger inbetween.

We started with Where the Wild Things Are.  As the review would tell you, Spike Jonze has made Sendak’s work proud.  Walking out Ed stated "it really felt dangerous".  It was not only delightful to experience but kept up talking all through our quick dinner – the reminder that it is so easy to miss real pain being experienced even when it involves those we love the most; if someone makes a new friend, they can still love us; the fear makes us do all sorts of crazy things.

A quick burger at Tugg’s Tavern in St. Anthony Main, one of our favorite  burger places and then back to the theater for This Is It.  I have to admit I was surprised that Ed was interested in this film, he’s not been a huge Michael Jackson fan during the years I’ve known him and was among the many folks who thought the world totally overreacted to his recent death.  I’ve struggled for a long time with the moral issues – not really knowing did he or didn’t he?  And somewhere along the line I settled for being able to accept him as an artist – one I consider to be among the most talented in my generation certainly.

And here’s what happened at the movie – we were mesmerized – even when it was clear the movie was over and credits were rolling, I couldn’t leave as long as Michael’s voice was still audible.  The film is a piece of editing wizardry, with individual songs put together from multiple rehearsals.  Michael is/was smart – you can’t help be taken in my his incredibly quiet genius – and gracious and humble.  And kind – he says please and thank you and honors the directions of others when he really would rather not.

So, two completely different movies have reminded me that I need to not miss the next wild rumpus – and in fact, should be calling out for one right now.  Who will come along?
