There was a time in my life, a really truly wonderful number of years, when my "new year" occurred in July – during a week spent on Star Island , a small island located 9 miles off the coast of Portsmouth, NH. Every year brought new ideas and enthusiasm to me – it was a week dedicated to my spiritual journey and to becoming a better educator, a better parent and partner, a better human and spiritual being.
It’s much more difficult for me to find the same new beginning in the middle of winter in Minnesota. It’s cold and there is no hotel porch filled with 100-year old rocking chairs suitable for grand and lofty thoughts. I miss the rocks to sit upon and ponder the future – and it does appear different when there is no horizon before me.
Perhaps I need only a new marker for my new year – a different time to reflect and resolve, to grieve and celebrate, to leave behind and take on. This is important work for me in fulfilling my promise to myself and to others.
Where/how do I schedule this magic with no magical place in my annual calendar of events?
We are not human beings on a spiritual journey; we are spiritual beings on a human journey.
