Welcome home, to me!
Life is just so full of surprises – I have come to love this word, SURPRISE, since I was fortunate to spend some time on a panel re: Sustaining Hope with an incredible woman who viewed every blessing and every challenge in life as a surprise.
Certainly emergency heart surgery, accompanied by 2 separate infections, counts as a surprise. As does a successful OR experience and a seemingly well progressing recovery. This all for my beloved brother-in-law, spouse to my only sibling. My personal blessings include the resources in time, support and finances to drop everything here at home and be present in Michigan during the past week. The sense of hopelessness is unavoidable, I suppose, however, it feels good to be able to wash dishes at the house or to sit in the CCU room while another person grabs a bite to eat in the hospital cafeteria.
And it’s a comfort to be home. To be greeted at the door by a very excited dog and a happy man. To sleep in my own bed. To open the refrigerator and see all my favorite foods before me. Last week was vegetable week at culinary school and the shelves are filled with veggie dishes that Ed prepared over the last few days and saved for us to savor together today. I nearly had beets for breakfast! And, I should have…
